Interesting facts about toilegami

Sometimes, when you go into a fancy hotel, you find the end of the toilet paper roll folded up into an interesting shape.  We know that these folds are called origami but this form of toilet paper art is called “toilegami.”

Toilet paper origami is called 'Toilegami' and it is practiced in many hotels worldwide. Basically, the cleaning staff folds the first piece of toilet paper on the roll into a shape. It is not only a marketing trick but there are two main reasons of adopting this creative art in toilets.

Purpose of toilegami:
  1. It is a way of assuring guests that the bathroom has been cleaned.
  2. To impress or delight guests with the management's creativity and attention to details.
 Interesting facts:
  • Stephen Gill, a British photographer has published a book of pictures of folded hotel toilet paper from various nations.
  •  An automated toilet paper folding machine called Meruboa was invented in Japan. With the push of a lever the device folds the first sheet of toilet paper into a triangle.
  • As part of a $1 billion renovation of the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, in 2006, the typical triangular fold practice was stopped as one of a number of changes in order to give customers an impression that the hotel was special.
  • The Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, also imprints its name and logo on the ends of its toilet paper — a practice done by supervisors checking the work of the housekeepers
  • The Tickle Pink Inn, a motel in Carmel Highlands, California, folds the ends of its toilet paper into fan-like designs, mirroring the folds of its bathroom washcloths Hotel toilet paper folding is such an institution that in the horror movie 1408 it is used as one of the eerie happenings noticed by the main character—after using the toilet paper, he finds it mysteriously has been freshly folded over.

Toilet paper folding or toilegami has attracted the attention of observers within the hotel industry and beyond it, involving both sober discussion of the practice as a marketing move as well as wry commentary with various degrees of seriousness. The practice has been considered an emblematic example of a meme copied across the world from a hotel to another until the point that most of them now do it.

Learn drawing -How to draw trees?

Pencil drawing is a popular medium to create drawings. As a beginner you can start learning drawing from anywhere. There are lot of books available which demonstrate the step by step instructions. Today I am reviewing a book which is really helpful to learn the basics of drawing.

You can learn few important drawing techniques to create various part of trees like leaf, branches and trunk.

"Drawing Trees" is an art instruction book written by Denis Naylor.

- You can learn about "Proportions and angles", and how to measure with a pencil held out straight at arm's length,
- There is a good tip on how to gauge angles of the branches, and size of the branches in comparison to the tree trunk.

For example there is drawing of oak leaves and acorns and whole-tree projects of Lombardy Poplars, Sequoia, riverside Birches and tree roots.

How to create quilled greeting cards?

There are many creative ways to create unique and amazing greeting cards using an awesome paper crafts form 'quilling'. Paper quilling also known as paper filigree is a easy fun craft of curling paper to make anything that you imagine.

Paper quilling includes rolling, folding, twisting and shaping narrow strips of paper and arranging them to create beautiful designs. It has been around for hundreds of years.

Creating quilled greeting cards is the most favorite use of this amazing paper crafts form. You may get ideas and tips to create unique and your own designs to create greeting cards from this article. I have added link to an ebook which is free to download. The craft of quilling is not difficult and can be taught by anyone with a little experience. There are many online sites which can help you learn the basics of quilling and then start making or creating quilled greeting cards.

Which tools you need to start quilling?

Essential tools to start quilling are paper and glue. You may also need tweezers to hold the paper strips. Any kind of thick needle or even pencil can be used to create quills. Using a needle tool is not as difficult. The best tip is to moisten the end of the paper first, then lay it across your index finger beneath the pointed end of the needle tool. Using your thumb roll the paper around the tool, keeping the tool still. Needle tools traditionally have a wooden handle making them easy to hold, but you could also use a hat pin or even a cocktail stick or toothpick in the same way.

Quilling paper strips are generally available in widths generally ranging from 2mm to 10mm. The most common width to use is 3mm or 1/8th inch, with the wider strips generally used for fringed flowers. You can cut the strips yourself with the help of a paper cutter and a steel ruler.
Get the help from online resources for ideas and techniques and now you are ready to create your own hand mad greeting card.

How to insert quilled card into envelope?
Due to its 3D effect, and to keep the shape of your quilling art intact, you should insert it into envelope with care.
To give extra protection to your quilled cards, cut a piece of bubble wrap or thin foam to fit inside the basic card shape. Attach with double sided tape and insert into envelope.

Another artist is from America 'Nick Georgiou' known for his use of the printed word as an artistic medium, but not in the way you think. He creates creatures and art pieces out of discarded newspapers and books, and has a penchant for depositing them in random locations throughout New York City. He creates anything from delightfully odd critters to eerily depictive portraits.

Nick Georgiou  uses old newspapers, collected by him or donated by others, tears them into folds and stitches them into various creatures. His works have been exhibited in various shows and galleries, bot in the US and abroad.

How to start collecting paper money?

A very common type of collecting hobby is 'collection of currency or bank notes of various countries of the world'.  At this digital and plastic money (credit cards) age, still people use paper money or currency notes. Like coins and stamps these currency notes reflect basic information about that specific country.

Lots of people have dedicated their lives to researching and compiling information on paper money or bank notes.

Do you want to start collecting paper money?

The best way to start is to subscribe to Bank Note Reporter. It's a sort of monthly newspaper for paper money collectors and not only does it carry all the latest news about new issues, currency changes, etc., it also has advertising from a very large number of dealers and it lists paper money shows in the US and around the world. BNR offers free samples to anyone (not just in the USA).

The Professional Currency Dealers Association offers a small booklet called "How to Collect Paper Money" which, if I recall correctly, even contains a few sample world banknotes.

How to trade/buy/sell paper money?

The most effective way to get paper money is not through general circulation, but through dealers, collectors, auctions, and shows. There are many online sites which can help you trade paper money or back notes.

The International Bank Note Society's quarterly journal carries free advertising "of a non-commercial nature" for people wanting to update their personal collections. Bank Note Reporter also has a lot
of small cheap ads for this. These are good places to look for people to trade notes.

Another way to buy/sell notes is through mail auctions.  Some people prefer to collect notes from general circulation. This is a good way for someone to start getting interested in paper money, but it's really not a very effective way to collect it.

How to keep banknotes safely?

To keep them in the best possible condition is to use inert plastics of good quality.
Common household products such as plastic wrap, plastic bags, window envelopes, etc. should not be used for storing paper money. Most plastics contain PVC, which deteriorates with time and heat, releasing acids and gases which will migrate into the paper, resulting in the notes appearing to have been soaked in oil, or so brittle they shatter at a touch.

Notes should be stored or displayed away from direct sunlight, to avoid fading. Repairs should be made only with products that are stable.
"Magic" tape and other plastic tapes will leave permanent stains on notes.

You can also keep notes in regular paper envelopes as well, although they're more liable to get damaged in handling.

Paper money has both a market value and a personal value. These two things are very different. There are big time dealers who keep a note from circulation just because it has an interesting serial number or for other sentimental reasons. Don't let "market" forces blur the real meaning of being a collector.

Neurobics - Brain stimulation techniques to keep the mind sharp

Neurobics are scientifically based brain exercises that produce natural growth factors called neurotrophins in our brains. Neurotrophins help improve brain performance by activating and building new circuits. Routine activities can become so automatic that they are largely done unconsciously and require little thought. Neurobics challenges us to break our routines and do things differently in ways that make us think. Neurobic exercises call on us to use our five physical senses and our emotional sense in unexpected ways to engage and build new brain pathways.

“Neurobics as developed by Dr.Lawrence C. Katz and Manning Rubin is based upon solid scientific evidence that novel activities and exercises using all your senses can enhance the production of growth factors that strengthen synapses and improve mental fitness including memory." Studies have shown that even small changes in daily patterns cause brain stimulation.  People with mental agility tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer's disease and age-related mental decline.

Neurobics can be done anywhere, anytime, in of fbeat, fun and easy ways.

Examples of neurobics:
Try to include one or more of your senses in an everyday task:
Get dressed with your eyes closed
Wash your hair with your eyes closed
Share a meal and use only visual cues to communicate. No talking.
Combine two senses: Listen to music and smell flowers
Listen to the rain and tap your fingers
Watch clouds and play with modeling clay at the same time

Break routines: Go to work on a new route
Eat with your opposite hand Shop at new grocery store

Few more exercises to achieve a fit and flexible mind:
  • Drive to work a different route
  • Unlock the door with your eyes closed
  • Use your opposite hand to dial the phone or operate the TV remote
Research has suggested that using your left hand if you're right handed or your right if you're left handed more often, can help stimulate parts of the brain that you don't normally use.
