A directory to find out art and craft sites -'The Craft Directory'

Being a subject teacher for art and crafts in early years, I usually search the net for useful links and ideas for my lesson plan. I enjoy teaching crafts projects to young children and my learning journey continues as I learn new and exciting ideas from the internet. There are many educational sites which offer useful links, resources and ideas relating to drawing, art and crafts. But I prefer to start searching at specific places becasue it saves your time.

The Craft Directory is a place to search for art and crafts related sites. You can definately save your time by starting search from this directory as I found a long list of topics and there is a list of sites under each catagory. You need to click the link and a drop down list of sites would come with a short description of that site. I just checked if results are good or not and clicked for 'Calligraphy' link. As I had a saved file at my hard drive about calligraphy sites, I knew many of the sites in advance and I was happy to find more sites with useful information about the topic.

There are hundreds or thousands of hobbies or interests which people like to spend time and get joy out of it but hobbies are not pass time activities, these interests can help you earn money as well.

Are you in search of hobbies which can make money for you?
Making money can be fun while enjoying the things you love to do. Many people around the world are making a living doing what they love and they call it 'hobbies'. I am also making some money from my hobby 'blogging' and I am still looking forward to make it a full time job. First I would suggest some informative posts about the topic.

First post is from 'Working From Home Blogging For A Living' blog which is about 'Sharing the ways a blogger makes money online blogging from home'. The blogger is making handsome amount of money from 'blogging' and shares his own experiences with us, so it is interesting to know the whole story behind this hobby which became a money earner for him.

"Get Rich Slowly" has an old but very precise post about 'tips for money making hobbies' and it says:

1- Focus on something you love

2- Be creative

3- Don’t force it
Your hobby will not make you rich. In most cases, it won’t even net you enough to allow you to quit your day job. It’s quite possible, however, to earn enough money to make the hobby self-sustaining, to keep yourself in new tools and equipment.

4- Don’t underestimate your ability

5- Market yourself

6- Hone your skill

Useful links for adventure lovers

Adventure means a lot to me because whatever new and exciting comes in my life seems adventurous to me. Even learning new things, reading a good book, watching a nice movie is an adventure to me. I love to watch 'travel and living' channel as I feel like being a part of adventures while watching travel series. This post offers useful links for adventure and adventure travel lovers.

'Adventure' word is described as follows at 'wikipedia':

'An 'adventure' is an activity that comprises risky, dangerous or uncertain experiences. The term is more popularly used in reference to physical activities that have some potential for danger, such as skydiving, mountain climbing, and extreme sports.

Adventurous experiences create psychological and physiological arousal, which can be interpreted as negative (e.g. fear) or positive (e.g. flow), and which can become a detriment as per the Yerkes-Dodson law. For some people, adventure becomes a major pursuit in and of itself.

Adventurous activities are typically undertaken for the purposes of recreation or excitement, such as multi-sport adventure racing or a traveler's adventure tourism. However, an adventurous activity can lead to gains in knowledge, such as in the case of the numerous pioneers who have explored and charted the Earth and, in recent times, traveled into space and to the Moon. As a more modern example, adventure education makes use of challenging experiences for learning.

Moreover, adventure can be describing an unusual experience or participating in exciting undertakings. An adventure action can be involving risky undertaking or an action without concerning outcome. In addition, taking an adventure can be illustrating taking the chance or to adventure an opinion.'

Radio control car buying tips

Buying and playing with radio control or RC cars is not a child's play now, but starting from kids, teenagers and adults are in love for this hobby. It is said one of the most exciting hobbies among people of all ages. There are also plenty of helpful tips and suggestions to save you time and money while buying RC cars.

There are some common terms that apply to all remote control cars. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with them and you can avoid making some wrong decisions when it comes time to buy.

Scale Size

Scale refers to the relationship between the size of remote control cars to an actual automobile. Scale dimensions are represented like this: 1/10th, or 1/8th. This means that the rc car is 1/10th, or 1.8th the size of a real car.

The most common sizes are: 1/24, 1/18, 1/12, 1/10, 1/8 and 1/5. The 1/24th scale being the smallest, and the 1/5th scale the largest.

Ready to Run

If you want to go from out-of-the-box to on-the-road in less than an hour, then the Ready To Run (RTR) remote control cars are the way to go. These cars come fully assembled including radio transmitter, batteries, and charger (for the electric models).

Kits

If you have time on your hands, and enjoy building models, then building remote control cars from a kit can be both fun and rewarding.

As an added bonus, you'll save money because kits are cheaper than similar pre-assembled. Also, there is no better way to know your car inside and out then having put it together yourself. Another great benefit is that you can add "hop ups", or customization kits, and mae the car uniquely yours.

Gear Ratio

Remote control cars use gears to transfer energy from the engine or motor to the wheels. A gear ratio is the numerical ratio of a series of gears in relation to each other, based on the number of turns of the input shaft, compared to turns of the output shaft.

Gear ratios are determined by the number of teeth on each gear (and therefore the size of each gear). For instance, a gear with 36 teeth meshed with a gear with 12 teeth gives a 36/12 or 3/1 ratio. This is usually expressed as 3.00:1. Changing the gear ratio of your car affects its speed and handling.

Nitrous Oxide

When you hear the term "gas engine" the "gas" is really Nitrous oxide, a compound composed of 2 parts nitrogen and one part oxygen (36% oxygen by weight). When nitrous oxide is heated it breaks down and releases extra oxygen which increases the ability of the engine to burn fuel. Because of this increased ability, higher cylinder pressures are created, which increases the speed and thrust of remote control cars.

Channel

The refers to the frequencies that are used by the Transmitters and Receivers that are a part of all remote control cars. If you are operating your car near others, then everyone must be on a different frequency in order to avoid interference and accidentally operating one and another's cars.

Digital Proportional Acceleration (DPA)

Small circuit boards are used to precisely measure out acceleration signals that enable remote control cars to speed up and down smoothly, like real cars, rather than in akward jumps that look fake. When you pull the trigger slowly, the car moves slowly. Pull it a bit faster and the car goes faster.

Digital Proportional Steering (DPS)

Like DPA, DPS uses circuit boards to emulate the handling and cornering of a real car. Turn slightly to the right or left, and the car steers right or left. Turn harder and the card swings wider.

While there are many more terms that you will encounter as you get deeper into your new hobby, these starter terms should get you through the process of reading the specs and helping you to pick your first car.

Create your photo story books online

One of the more popular hobbies among women is creating scrapbooks to show of the photos of their children, families, vacations and more. However, the cost and time that is involved in scrapbooks has started to turn many traditional scrapbookers to digital scrapbookers.

'Heritage Makers' – helps you to create photo storybooks. Now you don't need to store your photos on your computer, but rather you can make stories with your pictures while creating a 'scrapbook.'

Using an online studio tool, scrapbook enthusiasts have access to over 40,000 pieces of artwork, paper stock, embellishments and templates – meaning they don’t have to give up the creativity that they’re used to with traditional books.
It’s all online! No special “scrapbook rooms” needed, no scrapbook storage to buy. Plus, it’s easy to use the online art, because the “drag and drop” functionality means that they can also create pages in a snap, often in much less time than a regular scrapbook.

In addition to “decorating” the pages, there are text boxes to add to the pages, allowing for the telling of the stories BEHIND the photos as well.

Once the pages of the photo storybook have been created online, scrapbookers can then send it to print – resulting in a high-quality, hard-bound, bookshelf-appropriate album. There’s even the ability to put text on the spine of your “album” so you can quickly see which photos are in which books!

There are so many great uses for photo storybooks aside from using them as traditional scrapbooks as well. Brides-to-be can create wedding albums, sign-in books with pictures of the couple, bridal shower books, wedding party gift books, photo thank you cards, etc. Families can honor their traditions by creating cookbooks of Grandma’s recipes, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day books, special books for recent grads to remember their high school or college years, memory books of family members that have passed on, and more. And world travelers – like me – can document their trip in photos and text stories that bring the vacations to life!

For an example of one of my vacation photo storybooks, here is a link to the one I created for my Boston trip, so you can see one in action online!

Link: 'Heritage maker'

Creating a photo storybook is something like booking a vacation online. You can do it on your own, but if you need more professional help you can contact a publishing consultant to help!

Save money with 'The grocery game' -

Frugal means 'economical', 'wise in the expenditure' and when we start talking about frugal hobbies, it means 'hobbies which can be adopted without or spending very minimal cost. Collection of coupons, discount vouchers and promotional codes is one of those frugal hobbies which most of the housewives love to do. Saving money is another fun activity or entertaining as it gives us satisfaction and pleasure. It is pleasure if you could save up to 50% on your grocery bills monthly.

You can save a lot of money with the Grocery Coupons which are offered by 'The Grocery Game' where you can save money with your groceries and you know it better that grocery saving means a good amount of money month after month.

The story behind the creation of this site is interesting. It all started when Teri Gault (the company's founder and CEO)was trying to save money. He started it by collecting coupons and matching them to grocery store sales. Gradually this hobby became a passion.

Now Teri is sharing her money saving ideas with us through this site. The Grocery Game offers "TERI'S LIST" in all 50 states.

How to play the grocery game?

You'll get a weekly list of the lowest-priced products at your supermarket matched with manufacturers' coupons and weekly specials -- advertised and unadvertised. You have to pay a little fee to play this game, but if you could save hundreds of dollars by paying a little amount then it is definite saving.

Adopt Frugal hobbies to save money

There is a long list of hobbies, leisure activities which people love to adopt but many hobbies are expensive as you need to spend some money for those activities. But if you want to save money but need to be involved in some kind of hobbies without spending any money (or at least with minimum amount of money)then 'frugal hobbies' can help in this regard.

What are the frugal hobbies?

A few frugal hobbies might be:

Gardening
Reading
Sewing
Crafting
Baking/Cooking
Photography (now everyone has digital camera or at least a cell phone with digital camera, so it is an inexpensive hobby)

To my point of view these all activities come into category of recreational or creative hobbies and at the same time these hobbies help you save money. The list can be long enough because it depends upon you which kind of recreational activities or hobbies you can find around you.

Get the backpacking ideas and tips

Backpacking is a form of travel and in simple words 'backpackers' are usually single travelers with low budget to discover the world with small travel luggage which is called 'backpack'

Start Backpacking is for backpackers and vagabonds offering news, tips, ideas, guides and all necessary information which one may need to start 'backpacking'.
They says:

'It is not as expensive or as difficult as people think, and no matter what your age its never too late to start vagabonding. You aren’t alone. Loads of people know that waking up and making rich old men richer is not the way to live.'

The site is for backpackers and vagabonds. The site explains the term meaning very well!

Vagabonding
:

Rolf Potts, author of the book Vagabonding, describes it as:

“The act of leaving behind the orderly world to travel independently for an extended period of time” and “A deliberate way of living that makes freedom to travel possible”.

So put simply, vagabonding is the act of choosing experiences and travel adventures over working away your life for material things.

There is a difference between vagabonding and vacation: A vacation is an attempt to squeeze a year’s worth of enjoyment, relaxation, and adventure into a 2 week or 10 day package. What often results is an expensive distraction, and then an unsatisfied return to reality, which is always waiting at home. In fact, after vacation, you find yourself worse off than before you left, playing catchup with work, mail, chores, etc.

Someone that is vagabonding never really returns completely from their trip. They may be home, earning money at work, etc… but always they are in the mindset to leave again. A vagabonder works only to provide the fuel for travel and adventure, not to build a lifestyle of fashion and toys.

Their 'backpacking guide' has been helping people since 2007 and explains it many steps like:

1: Get a Passport for Travel
2: Planning a Travel
3: Getting Visas for Travel
4: Vaccinations for Travel
5: Find Cheap Flights
6: Backpacking Travel Insurance
7: Travel Preparation
8: Trip Purchases
9: Packing a Backpack
10: Before Leaving Home
The Journey Begins!
The new backpacker forums are full of both experienced travelers offering advice as well as fellow rat race escapees that are looking for some inspiration and brotherhood. The forums are the living heart of our site and there are new backpacking tips posted daily.

Discover yourself 'Which hobby best suits your personality?'

Sometimes we feel very enthusiastic about variety of hobbies and pastime but later we realize that there are few of those hobbies which actually suit your personality and you are really passionate about.

Is there any measure which can suggest us to discover our passions towards hobbies or pastime? or which pastime may fit our interest?

'CNN leisure' has offered an online quiz which can help you find the best hobbies or pastimes to fit your personality.

I have taken the quiz and the result was:

CREATIVE

'You have a gift for expression. Whether it's writing, drawing, creating objets d'art or making music, you see the world in a unique way and are able to convey that to other people. No doubt you doodle on napkins and meeting notes, are always humming a new tune, have already read the latest fiction releases, and know all the local art galleries' schedules by heart. You might like hobbies like sketching, photography, sculpting, playing an instrument, singing, journaling, scrap-booking or designing clothing.'

Happy new year to all

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850

I like the way Google shows its widget at any occasion. At the time of Olympics, there were many event relating clip arts whenever I opened the home page of my browser.

Let's learn more about celebration of the new year and few quotes relating to the topic.

The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible cresent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison.

The Romans continued to observe the new year in late March, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

To read more: It's Another New Year...but for what reason?

New Year Quotes:

# Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to. ~Bill Vaughn

# An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. ~Bill Vaughan

# Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits. ~Author Unknown

# The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. ~G.K. Chesterton
